catworkx extension for the R4J app: Automated creation of requirement structures for new Jira projects

Customer Story

As a long-standing Atlassian partner, catworkx connects and extends the products and apps within the Atlassian Ecosystem – tailored to the customer's needs. Following the transition to Jira for requirements management at a global manufacturer of banking and point-of-sale systems, it became clear that manually copying initial requirement structures was still necessary when setting up new projects. The solution: the "Project Management to R4J" (PM2R4J) extension developed by catworkx, which enables automated provisioning.

The project at a glance

Requirements

  • Transfer of Requirements Management to Jira
  • Preservation of existing hierarchical structures in requirements management
  • Automated capture of requirements through predefined templates

Solution

  • Jira Software
  • R4J – Requirements Management for Jira (ease solution)
  • PM2R4J – Portfolio Management to R4J Extension (catworkx)

Benefits

  • Time savings due to the elimination of previously manually created projects
  • Employees can focus on the relevant requirements

A global company for banking and point-of-sale systems most recently used software from PTC for its requirements management in the hardware development sector, which enabled a hierarchical structuring of requirements.

As part of the replacement of PTC tools for Product Lifecycle Management with Atlassian tools, the app "R4J – Requirement Management for Jira" from ease solution was successfully implemented for requirements management. The hierarchical structure of R4J is transferred to the project each time a project is created for requirements management. 1 During the recurring task of project setup, manual activities for the basic settings had to be performed on the R4J side.

Create new projects automatically

To optimize this project setup process, the company commissioned the Atlassian partner catworkx to implement a solution that would, on the one hand, enable the automated creation of projects using predefined templates and, on the other hand, also transfer the hierarchical R4J structure to the created project using a corresponding template. catworkx already supports the company in other areas with Jira-related topics.

For the automation of the hierarchical structure setup during project creation, catworkx programmed the "Project Management to R4J" (PM2R4J) extension. This transfers the hierarchical structures of a template to the created project. In addition to these, views, filters, and boards are also adopted from the template during project creation. Through this extension for R4J, catworkx enabled automated provisioning in Jira.

Focusing on the essentials – the best possible automation

Thanks to the "Project Management to R4J" (PM2R4J) extension for requirements management created by catworkx, the automated generation of new projects is significantly supported. 1 The manual entry of recurring, redundant tasks for requirements management is a source of errors that can be eliminated through automation. Additionally, this saves time when creating a new project in requirements management.
